What if it rains on my Elopement or Wedding day?

A question I get a lot is— what if it rains on my elopement / wedding day?

Alright, nobody necessarily WANTS it to rain on their wedding day and that’s understandable. But if it does rain— (and there’s a big chance it could because here in NJ last summer it rained almost every Saturday) — it will probably be okay. I don’t know if it will be okay for sure because I can’t predict the future, but if you were a close friend.. that’s what I’d tell ya. It’ll be okay.

below are some quick tips for surviving a rainy day from your photographer—

  1. Dreamy Aesthetic

The rain actually adds a completely magical element to your photos. It completely softens the light and brightens the surrounding greenery. If we’re really lucky, it also brings in some fog. It will make your wedding day feel like an ethereal dreamy day. I like to picture some of the dreamiest places I can think of for a wedding.. for me, the Pacific North West and Ireland come to mind. These two places are the grayest and rainiest places and besides the culture/scenery, that’s what makes them so amazing. It’s the moody element that the rain adds to the environment.

Plus, imagine looking up at the sky and seeing a rainbow come out? I would pee from the excitement as I do every time.

  2. try to Lean into it

If it’s raining, do you want to remember your day as being bummed about the weather? Or do you want to remember it as a day you and your love were dancing in the rain together and had an absolute blast? Kissing in the rain is romantic af. Watch any 2000s rom com or Spiderman. That shit is emotional.

  3. small Wardrobe adjustments if needed

I know, you’ve been planning what you will wear on your wedding day for a while now. But, it’s better to be comfortable and prepared for the weather. If you are wearing something like heels, bring a cute pair of boots or sneakers. If you’re wearing a dress or have your shoulders exposed, bring something to cover up a little. Like a suit jacket or a denim/leather jacket. Being comfy and dressing for the weather will make your photos look better and you’ll have a much better time celebrating on your day. If you really can’t wear what you wanted to wear, ask your photographer to take some photos of you in your original outfit, with the shoes you actually planned on. Even if the photos are somewhere else or on a different day.

  4. Bubble Umbrellas for days

These cuties handled the rain by using bubble umbrellas, which was SUCH a good idea. Bubble umbrellas should be a staple for rainy occasions because it really adds a storybook feel.

  5. Canopy for the reception

Though this isn’t always the prettier option, you can make it cute. If you’re not eloping and having a reception, see if you can add a tent or canopy. I’ve seen people decorate the inside with string lights, candles, disco balls, neon lights and plants. It can look really cute!In conclusion and to come full circle with it, it’ll be okay love.

  6. use your wedding outfit for a separate photo session

You can celebrate with just the two of you on a sunnier day and have your photographer document you in your wedding outfits. Best part is, you can do it anywhere! There’s no rules.
